Why, hello there! My name is Kara Swanson and I write whimsical contemporary YA Fantasy. I'm a lover of coffee and heart-chats, listening to the roar of the waves at the beach as I sink my toes into California sand, and working with teens both as an author coach and in ministry. I'm passionate about reminding weary souls that they are not alone, and that there is hope and breath and light even in the darker places.

I love to connect with readers over on Instagram, as well as Facebook and Twitter.

Here's a bit more about my latest release, a Peter Pan retelling/sequel called DUST

The truth about Neverland is far more dangerous than a fairy tale.

Claire Kenton believes the world is too dark for magic to be real--since her twin brother was stolen away as a child. Now Claire's desperate search points to London... and a boy who shouldn't exist.

Peter Pan is having a beastly time getting back to Neverland. Grounded in London and hunted by his own Lost Boys, Peter searches for the last hope of restoring his crumbling island: a lass with magic in her veins.

The girl who fears her own destiny is on a collision course with the boy who never wanted to grow up. The truth behind this fairy tale is about to unravel everything Claire thought she knew about Peter Pan--and herself.

Writing Dust was a leap of faith.

An I-must-be-crazy, tiptoe-to-the-edge-of-the-cliff, here-goes-nothing kind of leap of faith.

I was attempting to not only craft a reimagining of the original J. M. Barrie story that brought certain elements to life in a fresh, unique way…but I also wanted to root this story in the same Peter that we all knew and loved.

That was ultimately most important. Most vital.

Dust became far more than a retelling or reimagining—it became a sequel. A what if. A novel that follows our Peter when some of his shadows come to haunt him and he falls from Neverland to be grounded in London. Dust is about a Peter learning what it means to fight for what matters, a Peter who begins to understand that sometimes taking responsibility and becoming a leader doesn’t mean losing the magic—but fighting for those who may feel too crushed by the world to know how to fly.

And maybe, just maybe, this little Peter Pan retelling/sequel can remind you of the courage you have to take your own leap of faith.

And soar.
